Trego Nasal is an antibiotic that kills the bacteria responsible for skin infections by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins necessary for bacterial survival. This helps stop the infection from spreading.

• Reported side effects include:
  • Burning, stinging, or pain at the site of application.
  • Itching, rash, nausea, erythema, dry skin, tenderness, swelling, contact dermatitis, and increased exudate.

• Trego 2% Nasal Ointment is used to treat bacterial skin infections like impetigo.
• Clean and dry the affected area, applying the medication at least three times a day. You can apply a dressing over the treated area if necessary.
• Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, or nose. Rinse with cold water if contact occurs.
• It may cause slight irritation at the application site. Inform your doctor if the irritation persists.
• Do not use the medication for more than 10 days. Discard any leftover cream.

Trego Nasal Ointment is an antibiotic ointment used to treat specific skin infections, such as impetigo (red sores) and recurring boils. It works by eliminating certain bacteria, helping alleviate symptoms, and treating the underlying infection.

✔️ Pharmacology

• Mupirocin, the active ingredient in Trego ointment, is a naturally occurring antibiotic produced by fermentation using the organism Pseudomonas fluorescens. It works against a wide range of bacteria, particularly those causing skin infections, including Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant strains or MRSA), Streptococcus pyogenes, and certain gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae.
• Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by specifically binding to bacterial isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase. Due to this unique action, it does not show cross-resistance with other antibiotics. Mupirocin is bactericidal when applied topically, although higher concentrations are required for bactericidal effects compared to those that inhibit bacterial growth.

Adult Dosage:

• Topical/Cutaneous Impetigo (Adults): Apply 2% ointment to the affected area three times a day for 5-10 days; reassess after 3-5 days if there is no clinical improvement.
• Secondary Skin Infections (Adults): Apply 2% cream to the affected area three times a day for up to 10 days; reassess after 3-5 days if there is no clinical improvement.

Pediatric Dosage:

• Topical/Cutaneous Impetigo (Children >2 months): Apply to the affected area three times daily for 5-10 days; reassess after 3-5 days if there is no clinical improvement.
• Secondary Skin Infections (Children >3 months): Apply to the affected area three times daily for up to 10 days; reassess after 3-5 days if there is no clinical improvement.

No known drug interactions have been identified with Trego ointment.

✔️ Contraindications

Trego ointment is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to Mupirocin or any of the other components in the formulation.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

• Animal reproduction studies on Mupirocin ointment have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, since there is no clinical experience of its use during pregnancy, it should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks.
• It is unknown if Mupirocin is excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when the ointment is used in nursing women.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

• Trego ointment should not be used in ophthalmic (eye) or intra-nasal applications.
• Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
• If applied to the face, care should be taken to avoid contact with the eyes.
• It is not recommended for use near cannulae or at central venous cannulation sites.
• If sensitization or severe local irritation occurs, treatment should be discontinued, and an alternative therapy should be considered.
• Mixing the ointment with other substances can result in dilution, reducing antibacterial activity and compromising stability.
